Cătălina Joița | Emotional States

09.06.2023

The photographic project "Emotional States" captures a sequence of states that reveal a significant life experience. Cătălina Joița makes a series of self-portraits, black and white photos, structured in two parts. A more aggressive sequence – where body postures and facial expressions suggest the loss of self and the struggle between keeping or releasing emotions – illustrates suffering metamorphosed into a new appearance. It shows us the confrontation with the pain and disappointment with the current reality. The second part presents the figure in a calmer, quieter and gentler manner. This is the posture of resignation and acceptance of fate.

Cătălina Joița's approach encourages self-reflection, an analysis of the way we perceive life and the way we want to live it. Her photos speak coded about the effects that society has on us, but also about the consequences that our choices have on our feelings and experiences.

The artist will continue the series of self-portraits periodically returning to her own image, as the stages of life will offer her new personal experiences and new ways of relating to the surrounding reality.
