Alexandra Gheorghe-Papadopol & Amanda Stanciu| The Roof- a Proof, a Fantasy

Alexandra Gheorghe-Papadopol and Amanda Stanciu simultaneously started two works inspired by the same subject, as an exercise to test different visual sensitivities. Within the curatorial program Draft this exercise was taken further and transformed into a collaborative project that tested the boundary between documentary and fantasy in achieving an evocative yet mysterious pictorial representation.

The city of Timișoara, on the eve of the European Capital of Culture opening year, accelerated its transformation process. Buildings and streets under renovation continued to define the urban landscape. The heterogeneous image of the city combines old facades covered with scaffolding and tarps, facades freshly restored and brightly colored plasterwork, broken streets and neatly paved pedestrian streets.

In the winter of last year, Alexandra and Amanda began capturing, in two paintings, the image of the roof in the vicinity of the Faculty of Arts, which was in the process of being restored. The works remained in the sketch stage and they were finalized during a performance in which the audience witnessed the process of completing them with elements drawn from memory or imagination.
